THE BOOK The Bible and the American Future is now available A unique feature of this recent conference is that the lectures were printed in a book published by Wipf and Stock Publishers of Eugene, Oregon. This firm is the only one in the country capable of publishing rapidly enough to be available at a conference where the lectures therein are delivered, and this is the first experiment to do so in the United States, so far as we know. Normally, conference lectures are published six to twelve months after they are delivered. With the last of the lectures having been submitted a few weeks prior to the conference, dedicated and fast working teams in Lincoln and Eugene made this extraordinary publication possible. Participants were able to mark their copies as lectures were delivered, and could take extra copies home for friends and for reviews they may have chosen to write for various publications. It is hoped that the impact of the conference, dealing with a topic of great contemporary interest and importance, will thereby be enhanced. This 305-page book retails at $33 As soon as the conference DVD is completed, it will be made available for purchase here as well. So please check back! |

On October 18-20, 2009, St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska will be hosting a one of a kind, historic, national theological conference where twelve well known, world class biblical scholars from a variety of religious traditions will be lecturing on the topic, “The Bible and the American Future.” The conference is designed for clergy, theological students, and laity from every Christian tradition who are concerned about if and how the Bible speaks to our nation and the world in the 21st century.
Two different versions of the American and global future have surfaced in recent years. An apocalyptic vision that anticipates the solution of political problems through wars against the wicked has vied with a cooperative vision that seeks coexistence with adversaries. Although both visions have biblical foundations, it is the apocalyptic alternative that has dominated public discussion in the past thirty years. Most people are not even aware that another side derives from the same bible, and that it transcends the usual definitions of liberal or conservative politics.
A case can be made that the global economic crisis was caused in part by the illusions that greed would benefit everyone and that the financial system would take care of itself without regulation so long as leaders were committed to crusading goals. Torah and prophets, Jesus and Paul, and other biblical writings provide foundations for a more responsible public ethic and a more realistic vision for the future.
But this has been shunted aside in recent years by doctrines of military violence that would allegedly eliminate adversity and usher in the reign of God. Our conference offers a chance to move past politics as usual and to consider the relevance of some overlooked resources in scripture. Join us in October and prepare to be surprised! |
